Well of course they didn't deserve what happened to them, but really, does anyone think the doc really tried to kill them? If not 10 years is crazy, actual murderers don't do 10 years in a lot of cases.
The roads and highways of North America are an amazing piece of engineering, a kind of vessel system that drives the economy, but they weren't designed for slow moving cyclists that impede traffic flow. Now I can't be bothered to look up statistics but I'm sure there are at least 30-40,000 people killed every year, conservatively, in traffic accidents. But guess what, if we dropped the speed limit to 30km per hour and made everyone wear helmets and 5 point safety belts that would probably drop to near zero. Anybody want to take a 3 day drive to Calgary wearing a crash helmet the whole way, no? Like the commercial says, sort of, whether your 2 blocks or 2km or 20km from home there are risks.
I remember when a car smashed into me while I was driving my cycle, in this case it was a motorcycle that they didn't need to swerve around in traffic. Now it's lucky that I wasn't too seriously hurt, however I could have very easily been killed. Do I blame the person who hit me? Of course I do. Do I think she should be in jail? No.
People are effing stupid and the stupidest of them are the ones who ride the same roads with them on 2 wheels. These are the risks you take, next summer I plan to ride merrily as much as possible. You should see me, I'll be the one attached to your bumper.
